[TRU Research] Tukwila Research & meeting?

At last night’s membership meeting we decided to move forward with a ballot initiative in Tukwila. That means it’s time to step up the research! I just made a research folder <https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Hlb9i4TDotVjjcFmxkCykHO6sO9i4zWO?usp=sharing> where we can collect stuff. I put a couple of docs in there. If you have time to start some digging, here are a couple of areas where we have a lot to learn:

The employer landscape. We know there are around 45k jobs in Tukwila. But what are they, and where are they? How does this break down by industry and job title, what are the major employers, etc.? How many of those workers might benefit from a wage & scheduling law? I have no idea how to tackle these questions systematically, but I think really anything we can assemble at this point will be illuminating. We need to get a good grasp on all this so we know where to focus our worker organizing efforts (Southcenter Mall area is obvious, but beyond that?) and also so we know who our opponents are likely to be.

Live / work / commute patterns. A while ago I shared this census mapping tool <https://onthemap.ces.census.gov/> on this list. I haven’t really explored it further since then. But I imagine there is some interesting stuff to learn from it, if anyone wants to poke around.

I was also thinking some of us could try to get together for a meeting, either zoom or in person, the second week of December.
