[Transit] bus service increase/event

Wes and all, This sounds like a great plan. Also, I would like to introduce
a resolution to boost metro transit based on this letter at the April
meeting of the 36th District Democrats. If I draft a template, would y’all
be willing to review it and we can use it for other LDs? Thanks!

Thank you Sarah and everyone for your suggestions. :) I’ve merged them all
together into what I think looks like a good “final” document. I know we
talked at the (great!) event about where and how to send it; for those who
might have missed it, what do you think about my putting the logos of the
hosting organizations—TRU, The Urbanist, Seattle Subway—at the bottom as a
signature of sorts and then sending it to the King County Council, Seattle
city council(?), and Sound Transit board by paper? I have plenty of
envelopes and stamps. We can then post it online, too.

I remember talk of getting resolutions passed at different LDs, which I
also like. But we can chat about that on a separate thread.

Double checking on the website, rental costs are only $50. (There may be a
discount for nonprofits. Optimism provides event space discounts for
nonprofits.)

My rough notes from todays's meeting. additions, corrections, and
clarifications are always welcome.

Attendance: Amy (TRU), Wes (TRU), Sarah (36th Dems), Eugene (Seattle Subway)

*Event flow:*

   - 6-7: mingle time, tables
   - 7-8: each org does presentations
   - 8/onward: more mingling

*Speakers:*

   - Saunatina Sanchez - TRU
   - Doug Trumm - Urbanist
   - Sarah Reyneveld - 36th Dems
   - Ben Broesamle - Seattle Subway

Talk about your org, what transit items you're working on to boost transit.
You've got up to 15 minutes each you can spend on presentation, Q&A, etc

*Emcee:*

Amy will emcee (though if you're reading this and want to volunteer, let me
know :) )

*Sound system/speaker:*

Evan had mentioned previously that Seattle Subway has one we can use

*Action (already completed, thanks!):* Eugene will send Amy some contact
info at Seattle Subway so she can chase down if that sound system will be
available. If not, Amy will take Eugene's suggestion to reach out to
Optimism which has one we can potentially rent

*Setup/cleanup:*

   - Everyone's responsible for their own table setup
   - Think about arriving early so that tables are ready when guests start
   arriving
   - Be sure to provide info for folks to stay in touch with you, sign up
   for your org's newsletters etc
   - Please also allow time afterwards to pack up your stuff.

*Eventbrite link: *Boost Transit Now Social Hour Tickets, Tue, Mar 28, 2023
at 6:00 PM | Eventbrite
<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/boost-transit-now-social-hour-tickets-588344523307>

*Question for Doug:* Do we know how many people have RSVPed on the
eventbrite?

*Joint letter:*

*Action:* Wes will draft a joint letter for folks to sign, he intends to
send it around in the next day or so for edits/comments. Thank you Wes!

*Additional points of discussion re: the event and future collaboration
opportunities:*

*Sarah:* we need electeds to boost funding and take transit seriously -
prioritize a measure, a funding stream or source that connects community

*Eugene:*

   - Opportunity cost of transfer times re: N/S alignment for CID: 40 - 60
hours for a commuter facing a 4-7 min transfer
   - Would like to partner on Seattle Subway farmers market tabling
   - Would like to partner more in general
   - Think about Give Big May 3rd & 4th, Seattle Times primer: April 23rd
   - Transit Master Plan: Doesn't include Link, needs to
   - TBD: not fully implemented by Durkan, raided for bridges, needs to
   fund transit
   - Get City Center Connector back on track
   - Idea: Transit Riders Party in June (for Transit Riders Month)
   - Make it free to attend/hosted
      - Food/drinks/etc
      - Each of the big orgs could chip in $$ (maybe like 1500 -2k), small
orgs could pay what they can, Sarah suggested we get some sponsors
      - Invite politicians to come, speak
      - Seattle Subway did a similar event last year to celebrate SB
5528/revenue for RTA: $3500 bought the mezzanine at Optimism
last year for
100 people, we could consider getting main floor as well for accessibility

I will be coming back from Portland Sunday so not sure I'll be able to

I was thinking: mingling from 6pm to 7pm, 15-minute program with brief
speeches from each org, and then back to mingling. It will take a while for
people to file in so I think the program should go somewhere in the middle.

I will bring a small Urbanist sign and some sign-in sheets and name tags.
Glad you can bring some signage as well Evan.

   - Does anybody have a portable speaker and microphone? (Might be able to
   borrow one if not)
   - Think cleanup will just be making sure to pack out the supplies we
   pack in.
   - Joint letter would be a plus but not a must. Can post on The Urbanist
   if we go that route.
   - We should ask folks to email the King County Council asking for more
service and sharing their stories with transit issues. I think this email
hits all of them: ZZCNCMEMBERS at kingcounty.gov

Thanks all. Looking forward to the event.

Hey folks,

Big thanks to Evan who got us set up at Optimism for Tuesday 3/28. That's
just around the corner so we should probs get word out to our orgs this
week.

Here's the deets on Optimism:

We have your reservation booked for 3/28/2023 at 6:00 PM. Please look for
the table with your event name on it. We can have your event space ready
for your around 530 or so but you can definitely come in earlier to set up
the space as well.
Just in case you haven’t been in before, we only serve beer (no wine, mixed
drinks, or food). You will find a food truck in front of the building along
Union and our food truck schedule <https://optimismbrewing.com/food-trucks> on
our website. You are also welcome to have food delivered or bring your own
food or non-alcoholic beverages (just remember to grab silverware and
napkins). We just ask that you clean up after yourselves at our
self-bussing stations.

Does anyone wanna take the lead on crafting an announcement we can all use
or would you like to craft your own messages to circulate?

Best regards,

Amy

Hey folks,

Thanks to everyone who could attend yesterday! If you have any changes or
additions to these notes, please feel free to reply on the thread:

*In attendance:* Wes (TRU), Sarah (36th Dems), Doug (the Urbanist), Evan
(Seattle Subway), Amy (TRU)

*Topics:*

   - Event venue
   - Event goals
   - Event name
   - Event invite platform

*Venue:*
On email, we'd been talking about Optimism and Redhook Brewlab on Capitol
Hill, and Doug mentioned in his last email that he was leaning Redhook
since Optimism is so large - it could be hard to hear speakers.
Evan volunteered to reach out to Redhook to see if they have availability
for any of our preferred dates and to get further information about
booking, and he emailed them right after the meeting.

*Goals:*

*Broadly:*

   - Restore and expand transit service for everyone
   - Accessible, frequent, functional, connected transit for all
   - Better coverage during nights, weekends, and off-peak

*This event:*
*Goals for our members:*

   - Raise awareness/educate
   - Encourage participation in key actions (such as letter writing, public
   comment at meetings)
   - Sign on to a pre-written letter

*Goals for local leadership:*

   - Get this issue back on officials' radar
   - Demonstrate engagement and demand for change
   - Restore funding to increase service and support needed recruitment of
   drivers

*Event name:* we landed on *Boost Transit Service Now*

*Invite platform:* we decided to use Eventbrite

*Pending actions:*

   - *Confirm venue: *Evan reached out to Brewlab, ball's in their court
   - *Confirm date:* Dependent on venue
   - *Confirm speakers: *If you haven't already landed on who's speaking
for your org, pls get together with your folks to discuss
   - *Confirm Seattle Subway alignment:* Evan to meet with Seattle Subway
   this week

We'll continue to work through actions on email, no further meetings
scheduled at this time.

non-alcoholic options for folks...not sure about Brewlab but I'll try to
get over later this week to check. Optimism is open 7 days/week, Brewlab is
open Wed - Sun. Optimism has food trucks (and lets you bring your own food)
and Brewlab has pizza.

*Action: If you have another location suggestion, or support for or
objection to Optimism or Brewlab, please respond to this thread.*

*Speaker:*
Doug suggested that each of the orgs bring a speaker. There are some merits
to that approach - it'll probably be easier to get a few friendlies to
speak for a few minutes than to recruit one outside "bigger" speaker,
speakers could be spaced throughout the event so that everyone gets to hear
a speaker even if they only come for part of the event, it's always nice to
hear from different voices instead of just one, and will help everyone get
at least one guaranteed introduction to an org they don't currently belong
to.

*Action: Does this seem like the right approach to you? Or do you think we
should try to recruit an outside speaker? Maybe you have a different idea?
Please respond to this thread and let us know!*

*Action Summary due Feb 16:** 2 questions to answer on email (a sentence or
bullet point is fine), 2 scheduling polls to respond - I estimate about 5
mins total to complete*. I set the Feb 16th deadline because I find
deadlines helpful for this sort of thing but let me know if you need more
time/flexibility, I don't intend to stress folks out or be un-inclusive.

Thanks so much! Happy Valentines and Election Day tomorrow!

Best regards,
Amy

Yes, thanks for putting this together, Amy!

I threw in my/Seasub's availability for both a happy hour and a planning
chat. Let me know if you have any questions.

Also, I agree with Doug. For our first joint happy hour, it makes sense to
have reps from each of our orgs speak. In terms of location, Optimism does
have incredible capacity. We could also look into Red Hook Brew Lab if we
wanted to do something with outdoor options (I know Ballard and Fremont
have a TON of breweries with outdoor seating - but those two neighborhoods
can be a bit difficult to get to transit-wise).

Looking forward to connecting with everyone!

Thanks for putting together the scheduling poll, Amy.

As to the speaker question, I think just having one rep from each org speak
to the important transit needs emerging would be interesting for our first
joint meeting. We could look for outside guests at future events. I'd be
happy to serve as The Urbanist's speaker/rep. Does that sound about right?
Can also seek out a "name" if that seems more enticing.

Regarding the venue, how do we feel about Optimism Brewing? Feels like
everything happens there, but they do have capacity for bigger events. Open
to other ideas though!

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to get the gang back together on the Urbanist/Seattle
Subway/TRU/36th Dems pro-transit meet and greet. I'm going to recap what I
know and then give us some discussion items to kick off the convo.

Since we last met, Doug talked to Evan Jayne from Seattle Subway. I've
copied Evan on this thread, welcome!

*Timing:*
It sounds like Seattle Subway is doing an event next week, which felt a
little soon for scheduling us all together, so Doug and Sarah and I are
thinking March (*perhaps late March?*) would be better for a joint meetup.
I think we've talked about this as a *happy hour (6pm -8/9ish)* timeslot,
but please raise your hand if you are thinking differently.

*Action for you: Please fill in the scheduling poll - what day should we
hold the event?*
<https://forms.office.com/r/LuiMwCA69n>https://forms.office.com/r/LuiMwCA69n

*Place:*
Seattle Subway usually meets at Pike Place Bar and Grill, but given this is
a larger event, we may need to find a new home.

*Questions for you:*

   - *How many people do we think we can recruit from our respective orgs?*
   - *Any ideas for a good location? Maybe you know someone who works at a
cool spot? It would be inclusive to find a place that has a patio or some
   kind of outdoor mingling space.*

*Agenda planning meeting:*
At our last meeting, we talked a bit about maybe having a speaker at this
event, and it sounds like Evan is interested in that too. We could dig a
little deeper into what actions we are bringing this coalition together to
drive short- and medium-term. We can try to hash this out on email but I
suspect a live discussion is the quickest/easiest way to get there.

*Action for you: Yeah, sorry, it's another scheduling poll. When can you
meet to discuss the agenda/planning?*
<https://www.when2meet.com/?18703350-cnKIp>
https://www.when2meet.com/?18703350-cnKIp

*Question for you: Who should we try to recruit to speak?*

*Please fill in those scheduling polls no later than Monday Feb 13th* just
so we can get stuff landed and making progress. In the meantime, would love
to hear any discussion/ideas on location and speakers right here on this
thread.

Thanks for leaning in on this!

Also Evan replied this morning with an update, which includes times that
leads me to think March 20-23 window is looking promising:

"Given that this will be a joint event, and we'll likely attract a larger
crowd than we've attracted when we've hosted independent events, I'm
thinking the Pike Place Bar and Grill will probably be too small. Do you
have any thoughts on where we could host our happy hour? I'm more than
happy to do some digging and help pinpoint and then secure a location.

Also, in terms of timing, we're open to any week night (probably between
6:00 and 8:00 or 6:00 and 9:00?) the weeks of 3.13, 3.20, or 3.27. Do you
have an ideal date in mind?

Finally, I'd love to align on an agenda at some point. I think it would be
great to set a solid amount of time aside for open mingling/networking but
think having a designated speaker/presentation or two might help bring out
a larger crowd."

meetings. But rest of the month is pretty open for me. Exception is I can't
do Monday March 6th due to a board meeting.

Hi Amy and Sarah,

Was finally able to connect with Seattle Subway over the weekend, but I was
slammed earlier this week and have been meaning to update. They are
interested. We should be corresponding with Evan at
volunteer at seattlesubway.org for events down the road btw. They are planning
to do a meetup the week of February 13 which we could see about combining
forces with or take a look at March to do our joint one if that feels a bit
rushed. It sounds like they were open to combining forces in February.

Here's Evan's email below. What's your preference?

"My name is Evan Jayne (nice to e-meet you!). I am the volunteer
coordinator for Seattle Subway and am responsible for coordinating our next
happy hour event.

We are excited about the idea of doing a joint happy hour with you and
Transit Riders Union!

When we were planning ours independently, we were aiming to have it the
week of February 13 at the Pike Place Bar and Grill. When and where were
you thinking about hosting the joint happy hour?"

Hey folks,

two asks before I begin:

   - If anyone has Sarah Reyneveld's email address, can you add her to this
   thread?
   - If you were at the meeting and want to correct or build on my notes, I
encourage and welcome you to, just reply to the thread so we keep it all in
   one place.

Notes from our meeting today:

Attendees:

   - Doug (The Urbanist)
   - Sarah (36th Dems)
   - Saunatina (TRU)
   - Wes (TRU)
   - Amy (TRU)

Discussion at top of call:

   - There is common interest between the Urbanist, Seattle Subway, 36th
Dems, and TRU forming a coalition to advocate for restoration/expansion of
   bus service hours.
   - Trust with voters and campaigns has been broken - we've passed levies
for service hours that can't be fulfilled due to a lack of bus drivers,
we've seen Seattle City Council move funding out of transit and into bridge
   maintenance.
   - We want to amplify the asks that the ATU have made around improving
bus driver recruitment (the path to a CDL is time-consuming and expensive)
and retention (more hours, better hours, safety, childcare, etc).

To build the coalition, we agreed it would be good to start with a meetup,
and then follow up down the line with calls to action and a rally.

   - Would be open invite, but particularly targeted at building engagement
among existing members of our orgs
   - Doug said that Pike Place Bar has historically been a good site for
meetups, but it could be challenging if lots of people come.
   - Feb/March timeframe
   - We'd like a speaker if possible
   - Doug will be checking in with Seatlte Subway on their engagement in
   this process
   - Doug and Sarah will be leading the effort, with help from me
   - Saunatina requested that Sarah and Doug email her to be added to TRU's
BATS (Bus and Transit Service) workgroup mailing list, and encouraged them
to attend our next BATS meeting (4th Mondays, monthly).

That's it! Thanks for meeting today and have a great weekend!

Best regards,
Amy

Hi Amy,

Thanks for following up on this. January works for me. December was going
to be tough to squeeze in. I think awareness raising is fine for this
initial event, but if we can get people plugged in at TRU, The Urbanist,
SeaSubway, etc all the better. Fine to encourage them to start pressuring
their County CMs and City CMs

I was thinking we just invite our lists, post our respective websites, and
see how it goes unless you want to go beyond that to target audiences.
Long-term we probably should think about how to expand the coalition for
this campaign, but the January event to get the ball rolling doesn't
necessarily need to get all the way there.

Event can be anywhere. We're not tied to Pike Place Bar. Seattle Subway
just mentioned it had worked well for an event with about 30 folks last
month. Ben B also knows the owner. If we're expecting a lot bigger crowd it
might be an awkward fit.

hey folks,

I mentioned this to the Bus & Transit Service workgroup tonight, and it
sounds like there is building consensus that folks are stoked about this
event, and that January feels like the right time.

On the other hand, I am not sure how stoked folks are about meetings right
now :)

Things I can think of that it would be helpful to lock on soonish before
the holidaze sets in:

   - Date
   - Location (sounds like Pike Place Bar is currently the suggested
option, there was a question in the BATS group about whether they have
   outdoor seating?)
   - What do we want the outcome of the event to be? Like do we want
attendees writing letters, showing up to public meetings, joining TRU,
coalition- and relationship-building for future efforts?
   - Do we have a target audience and how do we want to reach them?

Thoughts?
